Primera División de ArgentinaThe Primera División de Argentina (also known as Liga Profesional de Fútbol Argentina) is the top-flight football league of Argentina. The league is made up of twenty-five clubs - all members of the Argentine Football Association. Founded in 1893, with the first professional season beginning in 1931, Primera División de Argentina has enjoyed a storied history of exciting competition. Popular teams such as Boca Juniors, River Plate, Racing Club, Independiente, San Lorenzo and Estudiantes grace the league while its most illustrious stars, including Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tevez, and Diego Maradona, have won widespread acclaim on the pitch. Primera División de Argentina runs within a traditional season format lasting from February to December. Both the season and the playoffs are structured with the purpose of crowning a single champion for the season. The Primera División features a two-legged league involving all twenty-five teams competing against each other. At the end of the season, the winner of the league is crowned the champion, while the bottom three teams are relegated to Primera Nacional. To decide the second participant in the league's championship playoff, the Copa de la Superliga is held in the same year as the Clausura. This two-legged knockout tournament features sixteen teams competing for the bragging rights of playing in the championship playoff. With the winner of the Copa de la Superliga automatically being qualified for the playoffs, the second representative in the championship playoff is decided by the highest placed team in the Clausura or Apertura not already qualified. In the past, the Primera División de Argentina has seen some of the most successful South American clubs in history, with Boca Juniors and River Plate leading the pack in career titles. To date, Boca Juniors have amassed 33 all-time championships while River Plate follows behind with 36. The Primera División de Argentina also holds the distinction of featuring some of the most passionate fan bases in the world with its matches drawing some of the highest attendance figures in the country.
