Mack Brown started his second stint as the North Carolina head coach last year and had reasonable success going 7-6 and winning a bowl game after the program went 2-9 in 2018. This year they are six points away from being undefeated. They lost to Florida State by three in a game they were ranked No. 5 and by three to Virginia. Maybe the crazier stat is that since Brown has been back in Chapel Hill, all their losses have been by a touchdown or less.

If they're going to have a shot at beating Notre Dame, they are going to have to play a much more buttoned up game than they did last week against Wake Forest. The Tar Heels were down three touchdowns in the third quarter but ultimately made a tremendous rally.

That's what North Carolina can hang their hats on. They are averaging 536 yards per game 43 points per game. This offense is tremendous, especially this running game. This will be the formula against Notre Dame. In their six wins they are averaging 262 ypg on the ground. In their two losses they are averaging 138. It's still a great average in the losses but they are going to need everything they can get against the staunch Notre Dame defense.

Notre Dame's offense is no slouch either. They are averaging 37 ppg and 463 ypg. But the way they are going to stay at the top of the ACC is their defense. They are only giving up 304 ypg compared to North Carolina's 413 ypg. Expect a high scoring affair but a close one, probably within that one touchdown margin Brown is so fond of.

Notre Dame should be the favorite in this one though. They have only lost three games since 2018 and Ian Book's first win in the navy and gold came against the Tar Heels. Since Notre Dame is usually not in the ACC, these two rarely play. Before they played in 2017, the last time was in 2008 where UNC won. All time Notre Dame is dominating this series unsurprisingly 18-2.

Surprisingly though, this is the first time that Brian Kelly has faced Mack Brown in the history of these two illustrious coach's careers. A spot at the ACC Championship is on the line. The Tar Heels must win this game to get in and hope for Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami to all lose at least one more game in the next month. A tall order for sure but they have the offense to achieve what they can control.
