Mexico’s most infamous arch-rivals will collide on Saturday when América host Guadalajara in El Super Clasico, with a lot riding on the line in regards to the push for post-season soccer.

América sit fourth in the standings ahead of their Week 11 clash at the Estadio Azteca, with five points separating them from Guadalajara in sixth. Miguel Herrera’s men have taken 10 points from the last 12 up for grabs, and a win on Saturday would put considerable distance between them and Las Chivas.

Both teams are undefeated in their previous four outings, though América are looking to bounce back after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Toluca in Week 10.

Guadalajara are sure to be in slightly better sprits after they sealed a late comeback to beat Necaxa 2-1 on the road, with Alexis Vega clinching the 90th-minute winner following Uriel Antuna’s equaliser, via TUDN:

Victor Manuel Vucetich & Co. got the better of their capital counterparts when these teams met in the Copa por Mexico semi-finals in July, part of the run-up to this year’s Liga MX campaign. Guadalajara held off a late America surge to triumph 4-3, but they later lost the final 2-1 to Cruz Azul.

Though effectively a pre-season friendly, that was their first win over América since February 2017. A win during the Liga MX campaign will mean a lot more for morale, however, particularly as it gives the guests a chance to move within reach of a valuable top-four Apertura spot.

Henry Martin will be out to plunder after scoring important goals in each of América’s last three wins. He bagged a decider against Atletico San Luis in August, going on to open the scoring against Mazatlan and equalizing after they fell 2-0 behind Puebla. Martin, 27, has scored five goals in Liga MX this season, the highest tally of any Mexican player.

Guadalajara’s No. 9, Jose Juan Macias, remains their go-to man in attack despite missing the mark against Necaxa, having scored in successive appearances prior to that.
