Marseille and Lens each opened the Ligue 1 season with surprisingly high aspirations, but the clubs clash on Wednesday in decidedly more desperate form.

Originally scheduled for October 30, this matchup was moved to a later date after more than 10 Lens players tested positive for COVID-19. Franck Haise’s side are still seeking their first win of 2021 on the fourth attempt (two losses, one draw), having struck late to secure a 1-1 result at Nantes on Sunday.

Marseille have won their past four games against Lens in all competitions, going without defeat in this fixture since a 3-1 Coupe de France loss in February 2010. Almost six years have passed since the teams last met (March 2015), when a brace from Belgium’s Michy Batshuayi bookended a 4-0 scoreline in Marseille’s favor:

Lens enter this rearranged round with a chance to climb as high as seventh should they secure all three points. Haise may be yet to secure a win so far this calendar year, but the coach can take some comfort in the fact his record of seven points from the last possible 18 is superior to Marseille’s over the same span.

Les Olympiens have taken only five points from their past six outings and slumped to sixth in Ligue 1 (albeit with two games in hand). Andre Villas-Boas’ men recently lost 2-1 to league leaders Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions, where Dimitri Payet’s 89th-minute strike was slight consolation.

So often the main source of inspiration for Marseille, 33-year-old Payet hasn’t offered game-changing intervention at his usual volume this season. Julien Laurens of The Totally Football Show recently critiqued the winger’s lax attitude:

With their star man currently at the depths of a dip in form, it also doesn’t help Marseille that midfield anchor Morgan Sanson is touted as a January transfer target for Premier League outfit Aston Villa. French soccer writer Mohammed Ali cited a report from RMC Sport’s Mohamed Bouhafsi, suggesting the links may mean Sanson plays no part on Wednesday:

Lens will be without a midfield staple of their own in suspended Yannick Cahuzac, which should see Cheick Doucouré deputise in Haise’s engine room. Marseille, meanwhile, have concerns in defense as left-back Jordan Amavi (injury) and center-back Alvaro Gonzalez (suspended) miss out, with Yuto Nagatomo and Leonardo Balerdi likely to fill in.
