Manuel Pellegrini was steering the ship at the Etihad Stadium when City last beat United twice in succession in 2014. Guardiola has since taken over at the wheel and plotted a course to greater heights. Although, the Red Devils have proved to be one of his more slippery foes since moving to Manchester.

The Catalan coach has won six and lost five of his 13 encounters with United since joining City in 2016. Bragging rights currently reside with his side after the Citizens beat their bitter rivals 2-0 in January to reach this season’s Carabao Cup final:

Guardiola has reinvented City to the point where they once again look irrepressible, with a small miracle required if they’re to be prevented from clinching this season’s Premier League crown. Undefeated since November 21, their current run includes wins in their last 15 top-flight outings. The most recent of those was a 4-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday, when the streak looked in danger of ending before a spree of three goals in the final 10 minutes:

United, meanwhile, are unbeaten in 10 but have also struggled to beat their opposition of late. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have produced goalless draws in their last three games and failed to win successive Premier League fixtures since their first two games of 2021.

Second place is theirs for now, but Leicester City can commandeer the runner-up spot in Week 28, with Chelsea another threat as they build momentum under Thomas Tuchel.

Academy graduate Dean Henderson played the entirety of that January defeat to City and looks poised to make his league debut in the derby with regular starter, David De Gea, in Spain following the birth of his first child. Solskjaer was impressed by Henderson’s impact after making his first league appearance since December in the 0-0 stalemate at Crystal Palace in midweek:

The Norwegian addressed reporters on Friday and appeared to confirm suspicions Paul Pogba will remain out of action, though there are higher hopes for Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof to return:

United have won in their last two visits to the Etihad and completed the league double over City last season, but the task looks all the more titanic following their rivals’ recent evolution. Guardiola’s tweak of tactics to promote a false nine has bamboozled all in their path so far in 2021, though United’s defense hopes to build on a run of five clean sheets in seven games.

Even victory over City wouldn’t be enough to bring the Premier League title chase back to life in earnest, but a 14-point gap is all the motivation United need to haul their nemeses back down to Earth.
