Continental bragging rights will be on the line when Bayern Munich face Sevilla in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup on Thursday, with both European champions proving difficult to beat ahead of this year’s showcase.

Champions League titleholders Bayern beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in August to lift Europe’s top prize for the sixth time in their history. They travel to the Puskas Arena in Budapest having opened their Bundesliga defense with an 8-0 annihilation of Schalke, marking their 22nd straight win in all competitions and a 31st matchup in a row without defeat.

Sevilla have yet to kick off their domestic season and were last in action when they beat Inter Milan 3-2 to win the Europa League on August 21, also their sixth such accolade. Julen Lopetegui’s side have gone 21 matches undefeated and have won the last five of those outings, but the step up required to topple Bayern in their current form looks like a tall favor.

Hungary will host a UEFA Super Cup for the first time and use this fixture as a trial run for fans attending matches amid the coronavirus pandemic. It was reported 30 percent of the Puskas Stadium’s 68,000-seat capacity would be used for Thursday’s clash, although concerns have risen following a spike in COVID-19 cases, via DW Sports:

Despite Bayern’s clear position as favorites to win this matchup, the two participants each have a single UEFA Super Cup win to their names. In fact, Europa League specialists Sevilla have featured in this fixture on five occasions, once more than Die Roten.

Leroy Sane scored once and provided two assists in his Bayern debut last Friday, and he’ll be expected to keep his place in an XI that needs few, if any, changes from manager Hansi Flick. Thiago Alcantara has left the Allianz Arena for Liverpool, but Joshua Kimmich looks a natural fit in midfield while Benjamin Pavard takes over as an alternative at right-back.

Summer signing Tanguy Nianzou is the only injury concern and will be delayed in making his first Bayern appearance, while Kingsley Coman remains unavailable after he had contact with a person infected with the coronavirus, via AP. Thursday could also bring a final Bayern appearance for Javi Martinez, who has travelled with the squad to Hungary despite reports he’s poised to rejoin Athletic Bilbao, according to Marca (via Football Espana).

Sevilla’s squad has required significantly more tinkering this summer following the departures of Ever Banega and Sergio Reguilon. They were key members last term in midfield and defense, respectively. Ivan Rakitic has rejoined Los Nervionenses after six years at Barcelona and said he wants to make Bayern “suffer” in his first official match back at the club, while Marcos Acuna could debut at left wing-back following his transfer from Sporting CP, per Marca.

Bayern edged Sevilla 2-1 on aggregate when these teams met for the first time during the 2018 Champions League quarter-finals. Sevilla took an early lead at home before succumbing to the Bundesliga behemoth, though the Spaniards deserve some credit for a 0-0 stalemate in the away leg.

The Champions League winner has clinched the UEFA Super Cup in six of its past seven editions, but Sevilla will look to follow the lead of 2018 victors Atletico Madrid by bucking that trend in Budapest.
