The United States and Sweden will continue their preparations for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics with a friendly clash in Stockholm on Saturday. Vlatko Andonovski has pieced together a record-breaking run of 16 wins since taking over the Stars and Stripes. It was a 3-2 friendly victory over Sweden that started it all off in November 2019, when Carli Lloyd’s double either side of a Christen Press goal sealed the win:

The ‘Blågult’ were responsible for the United States’ quarter-final exit at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where they went on to finish as runners-up to Germany. Both teams will return among the favorites in Japan this summer, with their showdown at the Friends Arena set to be packed with more venom than the average friendly.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side are responsible for two of the measly three goals the United States have conceded during their relentless run under Andonovski. While the visitors want to prove they’ve evolved as a group since then, Sweden will be compelled to show they’re capable of competing at the same level.

This will be just the third outing thus far in 2021 for Sweden, compared to a U.S. squad that’s already played five games already this year. Andonovski led his team to a successful defense of the SheBelieves Cup in February, and the U.S. have now kept clean sheets in six straight games.

Wins over Canada (1-0) and Brazil (2-0) were hard-fought affairs in Orlando, Florida, before the titleholders turned on the afterburners with a 6-0 steamrolling of Argentina:

Sweden are unbeaten in their last eight, meanwhile, and have conceded only twice in that time. Their current five-win run is the longest Gerhardsson has enjoyed since taking over in 2017, but toppling the world’s top-ranked team would present a new high of his tenure.

Anna Anvegård scored a consolatory brace when these sides last faced off, though the Rosengård attacker looks unlikely to start in Solna. Real Madrid forward Sofia Jakobsson is one of five centurions hoping to have an impact against familiar opposition, as will 120-times capped Linda Sembrant, who recently penned an extension with Juventus:

This friendly in particular will carry special significance for both outfits, one of the few chances they’ll have to test their abilities against high-level opposition before travelling to Tokyo. Andonovski referred to Sweden in March as “proven winners” with “tremendously athletic players,” a hint he won’t treat the fixture lightly despite the friendly conditions.

Only Norway (19) have recorded more wins over the United States than Sweden (six), although seven years have passed since the Scandinavians managed the feat inside 90 minutes. The Olympic trail will demand gold-plated standards from here, and two of the tournament’s top contenders collide in a contest to remove some of the enemy’s current sheen.
