In the Mountain West Conference tournament, there has been little doubt who was going to end up in the championship game. For San Diego State they have been averaging nearly 75 points while only giving up 60 while Utah State just came off a beat down of Colorado State where the Aggies are averaging a similar point differential as the Aztecs. This matchup is about as even as you can get in a conference championship.

The Aztecs though will have the slight advantage just because of what they have proved during the regular season. The are ranked No. 19 nationally and they've only lost four games. As a matter of fact they haven't lost since the middle of January. Albeit that was a back-to-back loss to none other than Utah State. This game represents much more than just getting revenge for those regular season losses.

San Diego State and Utah State actually played in last year's Mountain West Conference tournament and it was one of the few to be completed before the season was shut down because of COVID-19. The Aztecs were even better than they were this year securing a No. 5 overall ranking and easily the No. 1 seed in the tournament. They took on the second seed Aggies in a storyline that has become familiar which is the third Mountain West championship matchup in a row.

With just over 10 seconds left in regulation last year, these two were tied at 56 until guard Sam Merrill, now in the Milwaukee Bucks organization, drained a three to secure a victory. This year the Aggies will be relying on Neemias Queta, who was named MWC player of the year, to once again break the hearts of Aztec fans. This defensive juggernaut was absolutely dominant in the semis against Colorado State. First of all the Rams were held to just 25 percent shooting but Queta's stats may be even more impressive. He scored 18 points, 13 boards and an astonishing and career-high nine blocks.

This has to be the formula against the Aztecs to win their third Mountain West Conference championship in a row and upset San Diego State once again. Either way, the Aztecs will be in the big dance winning the regular season title in the conference but this team has much bigger aspirations especially since their hopes were cut short last season. Whatever the outcome in this game, expect a defensive heavyweight bout.
