Ecuador opened play against Venezuela, losing that match 2-1. Jeremy Sarmiento of Premier League club Ipswich Town scored the only goal for the Ecuadorian side in the 40th minute to take a 1-0 lead, but Venezuela scored twice in the second half.
Jamaica was unable to get on the board in the team’s first match, falling 1-0 to Mexico. Mexico’s Gerardo Arteaga, a left back for Liga MX team Monterrey, scored the game’s only goal.
