Kimmi Ascanio and the United States will take the pitch against Zara Shaw and England on Sunday.
The United States will take on England in the third-place game of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. This game is being played at Estadio OlÃmpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo on Sunday afternoon. The United States comes into this third-place game after not being able to get it done in a semifinal matchup with Korea DPR. The nation lost that game 1-0, giving up a goal in the 69th minute. In reality, North Korea won most of the game, totaling seven more shots and two more shots on target than the United States.
However, the US did make a valiant effort just to get to this spot. It came out of Group B after winning two of three games and took down Nigeria 2-0 in the team’s quarterfinal matchup in the first game of the knockout stage. In that 2-0 win, Kimmi Ascanio and Kennedy Fuller both netted goals with Fuller’s being a converted penalty kick. The United States will try to medal here today.
The United States will be taking on the loser of the other semifinal match last week, England. England came out of Group C as the runner-up to Korea DPR. The nation went 2-0-1 in the group losing only to Korea while beating Kenya and Mexico. England matched up with Japan in the quarterfinals that proved to be a tough test.
England won 4-1 on penalties after drawing 2-2 in regular and extra time. Zara Shaw and Erica Parkinson scored the two goals for the nation in the quarterfinal victory. England then met Spain in the semifinal match, and Spain shut England out 3-0 on its way to a championship appearance, leaving England battling for third place.
