Austria looks to stay at the top of Group E when it takes on New Zealand on Thursday night in the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup. The Austrian team had a tough first match but it escaped with a big 2-1 win over Ghana. Hannah Fankhauser opened up the scoring with a goal in the 12th minute and Nicole Ojukwu made it a two-goal lead in the 71st minute. Australia held Ghana scoreless until stoppage time when it gave up a goal to Stella Nyameke in the 91st minute. It was a hard-fought match but Austria got the three points for the win and will be looking to do it again on Thursday against a New Zealand team that struggled in its first match.

New Zealand was completely overwhelmed in its first match against the heavily favored team from Japan. New Zealand was outshot 30-2 and couldn’t get a ball to the back of the net in a 7-0 loss.
The team from New Zealand only possessed the ball for 33% of the match and was never in the game.
It doesn’t get any easier on Thursday as it will be a huge underdog to the Austrians. New Zealand will have to play its best match if they want to have any shot at pulling off the upset and keeping its hopes alive to make the knockout stage.
