West Indies, winner of Group B, takes on Group A runner-up New Zealand on Friday for a spot in Sunday’s final

For the first time since 2020, there will be a new champion at the International Cricket Council Women’s T20 World Cup after three-time defending champ Australia was ousted in semifinal action on Thursday. At Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, West Indies (3-1) takes on New Zealand (3-1) in the second semifinal. The Windies emerged at the top of a three-way tie in Group B to win it while the White Ferns placed second in Group A. West Indies’ lone loss came to South Africa on Oct. 4 and it looks for a rematch with the Proteas in the final. New Zealand’s lone defeat came at the hands of the Australians on Oct. 8.

The Windies clinched the top spot in Group B with a six-wicket victory over previously unbeaten England, 144 and 4 to 141 and 7, on Tuesday. Qiana Joseph earned Player of the Match with 52 runs off 38 balls while captain Hayley Matthews added 50 off 38. Afy Fletcher took three wickets and allowed 21 runs in four overs, with Matthews taking two wickets in the win.

The White Ferns closed group play on Monday with a 54-run demolition of Pakistan, 110 and 6 to 54. Eden Carson was the Player of the Match, bowling three overs with a maiden, two wickets and a 2.33 economy rate, while Melie Kerr took three wickets in 2.4 overs. At bat, Suzie Bates rang up 28 runs off 29 balls and Brooke Halliday had 22 off 24.

Kerr shares the tournament lead with 10 wickets taken and is third with a 7.20 economy rate. Fletcher is tied for fourth with eight wickets taken for West Indies. The Windies have won just five of 23 T20 matches with New Zealand, with two of them coming in World Cup play (2012 and 2016).

The White Ferns were runners-up in 2009 and 2010 while West Indies won its lone World Cup title in 2016.
