Canada looks to jump back into the lead in Group A with a win over Finland on Saturday at Prague Arena in Czechia

Defending world champion Canada (4-0-0, 11 points) looks to reclaim first place in Group A at the 2024 IIHF World Championships on Saturday when it takes on Finland (2-1-1, 7 points) on Saturday at Prague Arena in Czechia. The Canadians, along with Switzerland, stand as the last unbeaten teams in the group and trail host Czechia by a single point, with the Czechs having played one more game. The Finns come off their first regulation loss of the tournament and sit in fourth place, a point ahead of Denmark for the final spot from Group A for the knockout stage. Canada holds the all-time record in world championships play with 28 gold medals and 53 overall. Finland, which claimed its fourth gold medal in 2022, owns 16 medals in the competition.

Canada comes off a 4-1 victory on Thursday over Norway, a game in which the Canadians didn’t surrender a shot on goal until the third period and held a 33-6 edge in the category. Brandon Tanev of the Seattle Kraken opened the scoring 11:50 into the game while Andrew Mangiapane of the Calgary Flames, Dylan Cozens of the Buffalo Sabres and the Kraken’s Jared McCann also scored.

The Finns jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 8:06 on Thursday before Austria stormed back for a 3-2 victory, getting the game-winner with just one second left for its first win in 11 tries against Finland at the worlds. Saku Mäenalanen of Swiss club SCL Tigers opened the scoring just 2:51 into the game before Oliver Kapanen of Finland’s KalPa Kuopio netted his tournament-leading sixth goal of the tournament.

Kapanen leads Finland with six points, as well, one more than defenseman Oliver Kaski of Swedish club HV71, who has five assists. Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks paces Canada with five goals and six points, while Kaiden Guhle of the Montreal Canadiens has a goal and four assists thus far.
