Jannik Sinner faces off with American Taylor Fritz in the men’s championship of the 2024 US Open today.
For the first time since 2006 there is an American in the men’s championship match of the US Open as 12th seeded Taylor Fritz takes on top-seeded Jannik Sinner. It is also the first time since 2002 that the men’s and women’s singles championship matches at the only Grand Slam in America have an American player in both matches. Fritz will look to become the first American since Andy Roddick in 2003 to not only win the US Open men’s championship, but also a Grand Slam final in general. Fritz has been knocking on the door of breaking through in a Grand Slam for three years with five quarterfinals appearances leading to his first semifinal, championship match and potentially his first Grand Slam title.

Fritz’s journey took him through some of the best players in the game today including Matteo Berrettini in the first round, eighth-seeded Casper Ruud in the round of 16, fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals and his good friend and fellow American 20th seeded Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals.
For Sinner, he proved why he is one of the best players in the world as well as the top-seeded player in the tournament. He dropped just two sets all tournament with wins over fifth seeded Daniil Medvedev, 14th seeded Tommy Paul and 25th seeded Jack Draper as the 23 year old continues to grow his game as one of the best players in the world.
This championship match between Sinner and Fritz is just the second time they have faced off in a singles match. Both matches took place at Indian Wells with Fritz winning in 2021 (6-4, 6-3) and Sinner winning in 2023 (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) to even the series. This match now serves as a defacto tie-breaker in the personal series as well as the opportunity for Sinner to win his second Grand Slam and Fritz to win his first, with a whole lot of history in the process.
