The Dominican Republic hopes to move off the base of its group in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as it faces Costa Rica on Wednesday.

Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic will get the ball rolling on the second wave of fixtures at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup when they go to war at AT&T Stadium on Wednesday. The two Central American adversaries will square off in the home of the Dallas Cowboys and are each looking to buck their way to prominence in Group A, where Costa Rica currently leads the rest of the pack. And a win on Wednesday will effectively sew up a place in the knockout stages of the competition for Miguel Herrera’s side, who hasn’t exited a Gold Cup at the group stage since 1998.

More than a quarter of a century has passed since Costa Rica last failed to make it to at least the eight in this tournament, though that streak appeared to be at major risk in the team’s opening match.

Herrera & Co. got off to a winning start in San Diego after sparking a late comeback to triumph 4-3 over Suriname, where the deciding goal was only scored in the 103rd minute.

Los Ticos took an early lead before leaking three in a row, only for Josimar Alcocer and Manfred Ugalde to come up with two late finishes and rescue all three points.

The Dominican Republic, meanwhile, came off second-best against Herrera’s former employer, Mexico, as it slumped to a 3-2 defeat at SoFi Stadium.

Los Quisqueyanos deserved some credit for managing to fire back two responses, but two hits from Edson Alvarez and Raul Jimenez either side of half-time ultimately told the tale.

Early though it may be in the competition, another loss in Arlington will all but certainly send the Dominican Republic home in what could prove to be an all-too-brief debut for the team.
