CONCACAF Gold Cup co-host Canada can secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition on Saturday if it books a win over Curaçao in Houston while other results go in the team’s favor. A 6-0 hammering of Honduras in their curtain-raiser has put the Canucks in the driver’s seat atop Group B, at least two points ahead of their nearest rival heading into the second round of fixtures. Jesse Marsch’s men have won their last three encounters with Curaçao ahead of their clash at the  Shell Energy Stadium and are looking to make a statement in pursuit of their first Gold Cup crown in a quarter of a century.

The odds are firmly stacked in Canada’s favor after such a rousing triumph in their opener, where Tajob Buchanan led the rout with two second-half goals.

It remains to be seen what role Marsch will play in his side’s second game of the tournament after CONCACAF confirmed an investigation has been opened into the Canada manager.

The specifics of said investigation are still coming to light, though it relates to Marsch using offensive language during the 6-0 win over Honduras, where he was serving a one-match suspension in the press box:

Curaçao, meanwhile, couldn’t be too upset with its 0-0 stalemate against El Salvador last time out, and the team would be even more content to get a repeat of that result this weekend.

La Familia Azul have struggled in this fixture over the years, however, and lost all three of their previous meetings with Canada while failing to score in the last two.

Coaching veteran Dick Advocaat has seen his side lose just one of their last nine games in total but may find the step up in opposition too much to surmount on this occasion.
