CONCACAF Gold Cup titleholder Mexico will get its defense of the crown underway against the Dominican Republic on Saturday when the pair will face off at SoFi Stadium. And El Tri could hardly have been served a more straightforward opponent first up considering the Dominican Republic will make its Gold Cup debut as the lowest-ranked team in the entire tournament (137th). Los Quisqueyanos enter the fray for the first time as one of two debutants – Saudi Arabia being the other – and have been handed the unenviable task of pulling off arguably the mightiest upset in their history straight off the bat.

Not that Mexico has looked entirely at ease of late, but Javier Aguirre’s men have done enough to lock down a narrow lead as favorites to retain their title this year.

The 2023 Gold Cup winners recently suffered a worrying 4-2 friendly defeat to Switzerland earlier in June, where Aguirre’s back line looked severely exposed by the European guests.

And Mexico is looking to add to its 2025 trophy haul just a few months after lifting the CONCACAF Nations League crown with a 2-1 win over Panama.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic also recently suffered a 4-2 loss of its own before bouncing back immediately.

Marcelo Neveleff’s men gave up for to Guatemala but restored some pride on Tuesday thanks to its 5-0 hammering of Dominica in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
