Both of Mexico and Nicaragua have won each of their opening three games in qualification for this year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup, and its’ winner takes all when the two teams face off on Sunday. There’s very little to pick between the two teams as both El Tri and Los Pinoleros sit on nine points apiece at the Group C summit, but only the first-place finisher will secure a spot in Qatar later this year. Mexico’s superior goal difference puts it in the driver’s seat and means a draw will be enough to bag its berth at the tournament finals.

It doesn’t do a lot for Nicaragua’s confidence that the only previous meeting between these teams came in the form of a 6-0 Mexico mauling almost exactly two years ago.

No-one from the current batch of youngsters competing will have been part of that result, though it nonetheless serves as a measure of what Mexico is capable of at full speed.

Carlos Carino’s side have built their substantial goal difference after scoring 17 times without reply in just three matches, including a 6-0 annihilation of Barbados last time out.

Mexico could hardly have started the tournament in stronger fashion after dispatching Dominica 8-0, sending a serious signal to the rest of the competition:

As fate would have it, Nicaragua also beat Barbados 6-0 in its tournament-opener, while eliminated Dominica is the only side to have managed to put a goal past El Tri.

Only two teams have reached the final of the U17 World Cup more than two-time champion Mexico, and anything but a win for the Toluca host would represent a monumental upset.
