Chile set to make its FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup debut against Tahiti in Group C play at Victoria, Seychelles on Friday.

A FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup newcomer takes on a veteran competitor on Friday as Group C play opens at The Paradise Arena in Victoria, Seychelles on Friday. Chile qualified for the first time with a third place finish at the Copa América of Beach Soccer as the host nation in February and March, while Tahiti earned Oceania’s bid by winning the Beach Soccer Nations Cup in the Solomon Islands in October. The Tiki Toa finished second at the World Cup in both 2015 and 2017 and placed fourth as hosts in 2013. They are competing in their eighth World Cup overall.

Raimana Li Fung Kuee captains the Tahitian squad, which went unbeaten at the Beach Soccer Nations Cup last fall, beating Solomon Islands 3-2 in the final after group stage victories over Solomon Island (10-9), Fiji (10-1) and Papua New Guinea (16-5). Tamatoa Tetauria scored the championship-winning goal at the 30-minute mark of the final.

Chile hosted the Copa América of Beach Soccer earlier this year at Cavancha Beach in Iquique and reached the semifinals by going 3-1 in Group A with wins over Bolivia (3-1), Ecuador (5-4) and Uruguay (3-2) before losing its finale to Colombia (3-2). La Roja lost 4-2 to Paraguay in the semifinals before clinching the federation’s final berth with a 4-3 win over Colombia in the third place game.Gabriel Bacian scored the deciding goal at the 29-minute mark.

Chile and Tahiti are matched with Spain and Senegal in Group C, with the top two teams in each of the four groups advancing to the knockout stage that begins on Thursday.
