Winless El Salvador (0-2, 0 points) still has the door open to reach the knockout stage at the 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup when it takes on Italy (1-1, 3 points) on Tuesday at The Paradise Arena in Victoria, Seychelles. Italy, the No. 2 ranked team in the world, is a heavy favorite over No. 16 El Salvador, but after its loss to top-ranked Brazil on Sunday still has work to do to reach the quarterfinals. La Selecta, playing in their fifth World Cup, finished fourth in 2011, while Gli Azzuri has reached the final three times, falling short of the World CuUp in 2008, 2019 and 2024. To advance, El Salvador would need a win and for Brazil to top Oman later on Tuesday.

El Salvador lost Sunday 7-6 on penalty kicks to Oman after La Selecta blew a two-goal lead in the final 6:53 of regulation. Andersson Castro’s penalty kick with 46 seconds left in the second period put them up 3-2 and Frank Velásquez made it 4-2 before Oman came back for the tie.

Italy dropped a 2-1 decision to Brazil on Sunday, surrendering the go-ahead goal with 3:40 remaining in the game. Tommaso Fazzini scored the lone goal for Gli Azzurri in the rematch of the 2024 final, tying the game a little more than a minute into the second period. Fazzini and Josep Junior Gentilin have two goals each in the tournament.

El Salvador returned to the World Cup when it beat Guatemala in the final of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in March, while Italy was one of four nations to advance from the rain-shortened UEFA Beach Soccer World Cup qualifying tournament last October.
