Iran (1-0, 3 points) can all but ensure passage to the knockout stage at the 2025 FIBA Beach Soccer World Cup on Saturday with a victory over Paraguay (0-1, 0 points). Team Melli Football Saheli beat Mauritania in its opening match on Thursday while the Red and White dropped its first game to Portugal. The competition at The Paradise Arena in Victoria, Seychelles, includes the top five ranked teams in the FIFA rankings while Iran came to the tournament ranked No. 7. Paraguay entered the event at No. 12.

After conceding the first goal on Thursday, Iran roared back with four unanswered goals in the first period en route to a 5-4 victory over Mauritania. Captain Mohammad Ali Mokhtari scored the final two tallies for the Iranians while Movahed Mohammadpour’s goal with 5:41 left in the first period put them up to stay. Iran dominated play with 55 attempts on goal to just 38 for Mauritania.

Paraguay trailed 4-2 after the first 12 minutes and 7-3 entering the third period before making it close late in an 11-9 loss to Portugal on Thursday. Mathias Martinez scored twice in the final 29 seconds and Thiago Barrios also scored two third-period goals. Yoao Rolon notched a second-period score before being sent off with a red card with 5:45 remaining in the game. After going down 11-4 after Rolon’s red card, Paraguay scored five times in the final 3:49.

The Iranians qualified for the World Cup by winning the Beach Soccer Asian Cup in Thailand in March while Paraguay earned its spot with a second-place run at the Copa América of Beach Soccer in Chile that was played in late February and early March.
