Unbeaten Portugal looks to return to the Beach Soccer World Cup semifinals for the first time since 2019 when it faces Japan on Thursday.

Portugal cruised through Group B play at the 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Victoria, Seychelles, scoring a tournament-high 26 goals in its three games to emerge unbeaten. On Thursday, Portugal faces Japan in a quarterfinal matchup after the Japanese went 2-1 in Group A, with their lone loss coming to group winner Belarus. Japan entered the tournament with the No. 10 ranking in the world, while Portugal is ranked third. Since winning its second World Cup in 2019, Portugal has not advanced past the quarterfinals, while Japan is in the knockout stage for the fourth consecutive World Cup, finishing second in 2021.

Portugal opened the tournament with an 11-9 win over Paraguay before beating Mauritania 8-4 and Iran 7-5. André Lourenço led the side with six goals in the group stage while Miguel Pintado and Bê Martins booted in five apiece. Pintado recorded a hat trick against Paraguray, while Lourenço notched a brace in each game.

Japan beat Guatemala 6-2 to open the tournament, before taking a 6-3 loss to Belarus. It clinched its berth into the knockout stage with a 10-2 rout of host Seychelles on Monday. Takuya Akaguma scored five goals, four coming in the victory over Seychelles, while Ryota Tsuboya and Takaaki Oba notched three each. Tsuboya scored a brace against Guatemala and Oba did the same against Guatemala.

Portugal is a two-time World Cup champion with wins in 2015 and 2019, finished second at the inaugural event in 2005 and placed third in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Japan is in the quarterfinals for the ninth time in World Cup play, having advanced just three times. In addition to its loss in the 2021 final, Japan placed fourth in 2005 and 2019.
