Five-time FIFA Club World Cup champion Real Madrid opens its 2025 campaign against Saudi side Al-Hilal on Wednesday.

Real Madrid begins a new era in its history on Wednesday when Xabi Alonso will take charge of the team in its FIFA Club World Cup arrival against Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal. The Spanish powerhouse is the most successful side in the history of the Club World Cup having won five titles to date, the most recent of which came in 2022 when they beat – you guessed it – Al-Hilal in the final. Alonso isn’t the only new face among Real’s squad, however, and there’s a good chance new signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen could each make their debuts for Los Blancos.

Alonso made sure to get the signings of England full-back Alexander-Arnold and former Bournemouth center-back Huijsen over the line before the transfer window hit its break period on Tuesday.

Both new arrivals add considerable bulk to the back line, though ex-Liverpool hero Alexander-Arnold will be widely expected to add a lot going forward, too.

And the pair are already bedding into their new camp after making the move from the Premier League, with Alonso’s squad having dotted down in Miami earlier this week.

Alonso is already an adored figure at the Bernabeu after winning the Champions League, two Copas del Rey and one La Liga title during his time as part of Real’s midfield.

However, Al-Hilal will be a testing first challenge as manager after he completed the move from Bayer Leverkusen, and he has huge shoes to fill after replacing Carlo Ancelotti at the helm.

Simone Inzaghi’s arrival at the helm of Al-Hilal has received far less coverage but is no less critical to the match after he recently led Inter Milan to the Champions League final.

And despite having had little time to get used to his new surroundings, he’ll recognize certain star faces like ex-Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, former Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and Portuguese maestro Joao Cancelo.
