Ibrahim Zadran set a new Champions Trophy tournament record with 177 runs on 146 balls as Afghanistan beat England by eight runs, 325/7-317 on Wednesday. The previous mark of 165 had been set by England’s Ben Duckett on Saturday. The Afghan Atalans opted to bat and Zadran, one of their leadoff pair, stole the show, with Azmatullah Omarzai adding 41 on 31 while also taking five wickets in 9.5 overs of bowling.

Australia’s washout with South Africa came on the heels of its record-setting chasedown of England on Saturday, when Australia overcame England’s 351/8 opening act by getting 356/5 with 2.7 overs remaining.

Afghanistan has never beaten Australia in one-day international play, with the Aussies winning all four previous encounters. Their last meeting was a three-wicket victory by Australia in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup in Mumbai, India.
