The Shaheens won the trophy for Pakistan the last time it was contested in 2017, meaning there will be a new champion in the tournament’s resurrection this year. The Tigers advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in 2017.

Bangladesh sealed its fate and Pakistan with its loss on Monday to New Zealand that clinched advancement for the Black Caps and India. The Tigers set 237 as the mark to chase and New Zealand took a five-wicket victory, 240/5-236/9. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led the attack for Bangladesh with 77 runs on 110 balls, while Jaker Ali had 45 on 55. The bowlers took just four wickets, with Taskin Ahmed bowling a 1-28 in seven overs.

Pakistan opted to bat when it traveled to Dubai to face India on Sunday and lost by six wickets, 244/4-241. Saud Shakeel’s 62 runs on 76 balls was the best effort for the Shaheens, with captain Mohammad Rizwan notching 46 on 77. Abrar Ahmed bowled 1-28 in 10 overs and Shaheen Afridi took a pair of wickets but surrendered 74 runs in eight overs.

The sides last met at the 2023 World Cup, with Pakistan taking a seven-wicket victory with 105 balls remaining, 205/3-204. The Shaheens are 34-5 against Bangladesh in ODIs and have won the last three matches.
