Reigning World Cup champion Australia opens play at the 2025 ICC Championship Trophy against England. Watch on Fubo.

Australia, second in the International Cricket Council world rankings and the reigning World Cup champion, opens Group B play at the 2025 ICC Championship Trophy on Saturday when it faces England, ranked seventh, at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. Host Pakistan and the rest of the top eight finishers from the 2023 World Cup qualify for the tournament, which returns this year after last being contested in 2017. Afghanistan and South Africa make up the rest of Group B, with Bangladesh, India, New Zealand and Pakistan competing in Group A. The top two finishers in each group after single round-robin play advance to the knockout stage.

The top-ranked batters for Australia entering the tournament are No. 12 Travis Head, with Captain Steve Smith ranked 18th. Adam Zampa and Sean Abbott are No. 12 and No. 47, respectively, among world bowlers, with Glenn Maxwell wthe ninth-ranked all-rounder. Smith leads the squad with 165 ODIs entering the tournament while Maxwell has competed in 145.

England’s batters are led by captain Jos Buttler, ranked 40th, and Ben Duckett, who is 46th. Adil Rashid is the world’s 22nd-ranked bowler, with Jofra Archer tied for 32nd. Rashid is also the club’s top-ranked all-rounder as he is tied for 18th. Buttler’s 184 ODI appearances leads the team, with Joe Root coming in with 174.

Australia had some roster upheaval coming into the tournament. Mitchell Marsh was ruled out with a back injury on Jan. 31 before Marcus Stoinis announced his retirement from ODIs on Feb. 6. The same day, bowlers Pat Cummins (ankle) and Josh Hazlewood (hip) were ruled out, with Mitchell Starc withdrawing for personal reasons on Feb. 12. England’s lone change was Jacob Bethell (hamstring) being replaced by Tom Banton on Feb. 12.
