World No. 5 South Africa opens Group B play at the ICC Champions Trophy against eighth ranked Afghanistan on Friday.

Group B play opens on Friday at the 2025 International Cricket Council Champions Trophy when South Africa, ranked No. 5 in the ICC one-day international world rankings, squares off with eighth-ranked Afghanistan at National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan. The Proteas are in their ninth straight Champions Trophy tournament, which returns in 2025 after last being played in 2017. The tournament has traditionally been held on a four-year cycle in between World Cups. For the Afghan Atalans, it is their first Champions Trophy appearance after becoming full members of the ICC in 2017 and placing sixth at the 2023 World Cup.

South Africa’s top-ranked batters entering the tournament are Heinrich Klassen, ranked fourth in the ICC world rankings, and Rassie van der Dussen, currently No. 19. Keshav Maharaj is the sixth-ranked bowler in the world, with Kagiso Rabada ranked 20th. Among the all-rounders, Marco Jansen is tied for 18th shares 31st place. Rabada leads the team with 103 ODI appearances.

Afghanistan comes in with the No. 8 world ranking and its batters are led by Rahmanullah Gurbaz, tied for 10th in the ICC rankings, and Ibraham Zadran, No. 20. Rashid Khan is the second-ranked bowler in the world with Mohammad Nabi coming into the tournament at No. 14. Nabi is the top-ranked all-rounder in the world, with Azmatullah Omarzai ranked No. 3. Nabi, 40, has played in a team-high 170 ODIs.

Friday’s match is just the sixth ODI between the Proteas and the Afghan Atalans, with South Africa winning their meetings at both the 2019 and 2023 World Cups before Afghanistan took two of three in a September ODI series played in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
