Japan (1-0-0, 3 points) opened play in Group B at the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship with a convincing victory and on Friday has the opportunity to all but clinch passage to the quarterfinals when it faces Hungary (0-1-0, 0 points) at Budvar Arena in České Budějovice, Czechia. Hungary returned to the top division with a second-place finish at the 2024 Division I championships in Klagenfurt, Austria, last April, while the Japanese remained in the top division with an eighth-place finish at last year’s worlds in Utica, New York.

Mei Miura of Swedish League club AIK Hockey broke a 2-2 tie 4:40 into the second period and Japan cruised from there to a 5-2 victory over Norway on Thursday. Miura also added an assist while Akane Hosoyamada, Rui Ukita, Riri Noro and Akane Shiga also scored. Suzuka Maeda posted three assists, Makato Ito had a pair of helpers and Miyuu Masuhara made 25 saves.

Hungary battled Sweden throughout before dropping a 2-0 decision on Thursday. Anikó Németh made 22 saves as the teams were even at 24-24 in shots on goal. The Hungarian roster includes four NCAA players in Zsófia Pázmándi (Lindenwood), Míra Seregély (Maine), Regina Metzler (Mercyhurst) and Emma Kreisz (Minnesota).

Japan’s best finish in 13 world championships was a fifth-place run in 2022 while Hungary’s eighth-place mark in the same tournament is their best effort in four appearances at the worlds.
