The United States opens the knockout stage against Germany after steamrolling through Group A in Czechia.

The United States cruised to the top of Group A at the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship, outscoring four opponents 18-2 to earn the top seed for the knockout stage. The U.S. takes on Germany in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday at Budvar Arena in České Budějovice, Czechia, with the Germans coming off a 2-2-0 showing in Group B to claim the final spot in the quarterfinals. The United States took the silver medal last year in Utica, New York, while Germany landed in Group B after losing the fifth-place game to Switzerland.

The Americans closed out their sweep of Group A with a 5-0 blanking of Switzerland on Tuesday, outshooting the Swiss 53-6. Six U.S. players have two goals each in the tournament while captain Hilary Knight of the Boston Fleet and Alex Carpenter of the New York Sirens have six points apiece, with Knight scoring two goals and Carpenter one. Fleet goalie Aerin Frankel went 2-0-0 in two starts with a 1.00 goals-against average and .949 save percentage while Gwyneth Philips of the Ottawa Charge didn’t allow a goal in 91:04 of ice time.

The Germans lost their group-stage finale 1-0 on Tuesday to Japan, with their wins coming against Norway and Hungary, both of which were promoted from Division I for this year’s tournament and will be relegated back to that group for 2026. Nicola Hadraschek of the Memmingen Indians in Germany and Katarina Jobst-Smith, who plays at Minnesota Duluth, have two goals each while Laura Kluge of the Toronto Sceptres leads the team with four points. Sandra Abstreiter of the Montreal Victoire has done all the work in net, with a 2.02 goals-against average and .913 save percentage.

The United States is unbeaten in four games against Germany and has not conceded a goal, outscoring the Germans 29-0. The last meeting was in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Worlds in Brampton, Ontario, when the U.S. claimed a 3-0 win.
