Canada looks to remain unbeaten ahead of a showdown with Sweden as it takes on Finland on Monday

Canada (5-0-0, 15 points) has designs on taking the top spot in Group A at the 2025 IIHF World Championship but needs to avoid stubbing its toe on Monday when it takes on Finland (4-1-0, 11 points) at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, ahead of a showdown with the co-host Swedes. Canada trails Sweden by three points with a game in hand while the Finns are two points ahead of Latvia in third place in the group standings, also with a game in hand. Sweden, Canada and Finland have all clinched spots into the quarterfinals as group play winds down.

Canada eliminated Slovakia from medal contention on Saturday with a 7-0 victory. Jordan Binnington (St. Louis Blues) made 14 saves to get the shutout while captain Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche) each scored two goals. Binnington has posted shutouts in each of his two starts, stopping 29 shots. MacKinnon is tied for the tournament lead with six goals and 10 points.

Finland held off Latvia in the closing minutes for a 2-1 win on Saturday. Juuse Saros (Nashville Predators) made 34 saves, losing his shutout with 4:51 left. Juuso Pärssinen (New York Rangers) and captain Mikko Lehtonen (ZSC Lions, Switzerland) had the goals for the Finns. Eeli Tolvanen (Seattle Kraken) leads the team with six goals while Teuvo Teräväinen (Chicago Blackhawks) has nine points in the event. Saros comes into Monday with a 1.26 goals-against average and .954 save percentage.

The Canadians have won 28 gold medals at the Worlds, with the last coming in 2023 before a fourth-place finish in 2024. The Finns won the gold in 2022, their fourth in the tournament, before an eighth-place run last year.
