Canada fell behind early on Sunday when Latvia scored a little more than seven minutes into the game but recovered to post a 7-1 rout, getting two goals apiece from Travis Konecny of the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kent Johnson. Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks youngster Macklin Celebrini and Barrett Hayden of the Utah Mammoth also lit the lamp. MacKinnon, Konecny, Johnson and Bo Horvat of the New York Islanders each have two goals so far, with MacKinnon and Konecny leading the club with four points each.

Jordann Perret of Czech club Mountfield scored into an empty net with 2:42 remaining in regulation to give France a 3-1 lead over Finland on Sunday before the Finns came back for a stunning 4-3 overtime win. Kevin Bozon, who plays for Swiss club Ajoie, opened the scoring in the second period and brother Tim Bozon of Lausanne in Switzerland put the French on top 2-1 at 10:57 of the third period. Dylan Fabre, who plays for Assat Pori in Finland, also has a goal in the tournament, with Tim Bozon, Perret and captain Pierre-Edouard Bellemare of Ajoie all posting two points thus far.

Canada has won 28 gold medals at the World Championship, most recently in 2023, and lost the bronze medal game last year in Czechia. France has never finished better than sixth at the tournament, that coming in 1930, and placed 14th in 2024.
