In their second effort as hosts of the IIHF World Championship Denmark got off to a rough start. They lost the opening game to the United States in a tough, 5-0 lopsided affair. Denmark has no time to lick its wounds with Switzerland up next on the schedule playing a second game in as many days. Denmark started off playing well in the loss to the United States allowing just one first period goal. From there the United States were able to score two goals in each of the second and third period respectively. The competition does not get easier with last years silver medalist country Switzerland up next after taking on the United States who are always competitive in this tournament.

On the offensive end of the ice Denmark only got off 26 shots on goal without lighting the lamp. After playing nearly even with the United States in the first period, matching them shot-for-shot and allowing just one goal, Denmark was playing on its heels for the rest of the game.

Switzerland is also coming off a loss in its first game. They fell in overtime to Czechia (5-4) despite getting off to a strong start in the first period. Christian Marti and Damien Riat scored in the first period.

Sandro Schmid and Sven Andrighetto scored the first two goals in the third period to give Switzerland the lead again before falling in overtime.
