Co-host Sweden returns from an off day looking for a 3rd straight win at the IIHF World Championships against Scandinavian rival Finland

Sweden (2-0-0, 6 points) is off to a strong start at the 2025 IIHF World Championship as the event’s co-host and returns to the ice on Monday after a day off. The Swedes take on Scandinavian rival Finland (2-0-0, 5 points), which had to survive overtime on Sunday and is third in Group A, being staged at Avicii Arena in Stockholm. The Finns placed eighth at the 2024 Worlds in Czechia and last medaled in 2022 when they took the gold. Sweden claimed a bronze medal last year, its first hardware at the World Championships since claiming gold in 2018.

Eeli Tolvanen of the Seattle Kraken scored twice in the final 1:33 of regulation to save Finland from a loss before New York Rangers forward Juuso Pärssinen delivered the game-winner 1:24 into overtime in a 4-3 victory over France on Sunday. The Finns never led until the end, with Teuvo Teräväinen of the Chicago Blackhawks tying the game at 1-1 late in the first period before France took a 3-1 lead with 2:42 left in regulation. Tolvanen and Pärssinen lead Finland with two goasl each while captain Mikko Lehtonen of Switzerland’s ZSC Lions has three points, as does Tolvanen.

New York Rangers star Mika Zibanejad’s second goal of the game with 2:07 left in the game gave Sweden the lead in its 4-2 win over Austria on Saturday. It was the first lead of the game for the Swedes, after Zibanejad scored a tying goal in the first period and Jonas Brodin of the Minnesota Wild knotted the game at 2-2 12 seconds before Zibanejad’s eventual game-winner. San Jose Sharks forward Alexander Wennberg iced the decision with an empty-netter. Zibanejad has three goals already while Elias Lindholm of the Boston Bruins leads the team with four points on a goal and three assists.

Finland has won 16 medals at the World Championships, including four golds, while Sweden’s medal haul stands at 45, with 11 of those gold.
