Since 1920 Canada has made the quarterfinals of the IIHF World Championship every year the tournament was held. They are back in the quarterfinals again this year taking on Denmark who advanced out of the preliminary round as one of the two host countries. Denmark will have home ice advantage here in the quarterfinals. This is just Denmark’s third appearance in the playoff round of the IIHF World Championship finishing eighth in both other opportunities. Both teams are vying to make the semifinals where they will face either Switzerland, who won Group B or Austria who qualified as the final team in the playoffs.

During group play Canada won its first five games in dominant fashion. They had a goal differential of 28-2 in those first five games. Canada lost its only game to Finland in overtime before rebounding with a win over Sweden to close out group play.

Denmark survived group play winning four games and losing three scoring just one more goal that it allowed to opponents. After losing its first three games to start group play while being outscored 17-4 overall. Those losses set the stage for the host countries dramatic run up the standings.

They rallied with three straight wins over Kazakhstan (5-1), Hungary (8-2), Norway (6-3) and most importantly, a win-or-go-home game over Germany (2-1) to close out group play. Denmark looks to win its first playoff game in the IIHF World Championship with the crowd behind it and a four-game winning streak.
