Sweden (7-1-0) continues its quest for an IIHF World Championship gold medal on home ice when it takes on the United States (7-1-0) in a semifinal game at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday. The Swedes finished second in Group A during the preliminary round while the Americans were runners up in Group B. The winner advances to Sunday’s gold-medal game against the winner between Denmark and Switzerland, to be played later on Saturday, while the losers of the two semifinals will face off for the bronze medal on Sunday.

Conor Garland (Vancouver Canucks) scored twice in Thursday’s 5-2 U.S. victory over Finland in the quarterfinals, with Zeev Buium (Minnesota Wild), Shane Pinto (Ottawa Senators) and captain Clayton Keller (Utah Mammoth) also lighting the lamp. Frank Nazar leads the team with six goals and 11 points while Tage Thompson has five markers in the tourmanent. Sweden put in three first-period goals and cruised to a 5-2 quarterfinal win over defending champion Czechia on Thursday. Lucas Raymond (Detroit Red Wings) and Leo Carlsson (Anaheim Ducks) each scored twice and Filip Forsberg (Nashville Predators) sealed the deal with an empty-net goal with 4:56 remaining. Elias Lindholm (Boston Bruins) has seven goals and 11 points for the Swedes in the tournament while Jacob Markström (New Jersey Devils) is 4-1-0 in goal with a 1.62 GAA and .914 save percentage.

A key matchup pits the power play of the United States, which is a tournament-best 9-for-27, against Sweden’s penalty kill. The Swedes have successfully killed of 15 of 16 shorthanded situations, the second-best success rate at the Worlds. Sweden won the bronze medal in Czechia in 2024 while the U.S. last medaled in 2021, taking the bronze.
