New Jersey Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom needed to make just 15 saves to shut out Slovakia 5-0 on Friday. Mikael Backstrom of the Calgary Flames, Leo Carlsson of the Anaheim Ducks and Jonas Brodin of the Minnesota Wild scored first-period goals to stake Sweden to a 3-0 lead, with Elias Lindholm of the Boston Bruins and Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers providing insurance markers later in the game.

Bernd Wolf, who plays for Swiss club EHC Kloten, drew the Austrians to within a goal at 2-1 with 6:06 remaining but that was as close as they could get in an opening-day loss to Finland. Atte Tolvanen, who competes for EC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, made 26 saves in the loss.

Sweden is an 11-time gold-medalist at the World Championships, most recently going back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. Its bronze medal in 2024 was its first trip to the podium since claiming the two straight golds. Austria hasn’t medaled at the World Championships since claiming bronze in 1947 and its only other medal-winning effort was another bronze in 1931.
