The top spot in Group A at the IIHF World Championship comes down to the final game between Sweden, Canada

It won’t be the battle of the unbeatens most expected on Tuesday, but first place in Group A at the 2025 IIHF World Championship still comes down to Sweden (6-0-0, 18 points) and Canada (5-0-1, 16 points) at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. The Canadians dropped an overtime decision on Monday and must win in regulation to capture the top seed from the group. Sweden has a bit less pressure as it just needs to finish with a regulation tie to claim the group title and a matchup with either Denmark or Germany in the quarterfinals.

The Swedes come in with a rest advantage after having not played since a 4-0 win over France on Saturday. Samuel Ersson (Philadelphia Flyers) made 16 saves in the shutout and Sweden took control when Lucas Raymond (Detroit Red Wings) and Emil Heineman (Montreal Canadiens) scored 58 seconds apart in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Elias Lindholm (Boston Bruins) shares the tournament lead with six goals and tops the Swedes with 10 points. Jacob Markström (New Jersey Devils) has surrendered one goal in three starts and has a .977 save percentage.

Canada couldn’t hold a 1-0 lead claimed late in the second period and fell to Finland 2-1 in a shootout on Monday. Adam Fantilli had a chance to extend the shootout but his shot missed the net wide right. Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves in the game but stopped only three of the five shootout attempts. Ryan O’Reilly scored the Canadians’ only goal with 2:03 left in the second period. Nathan MacKinnon is tied for the tournament lead with six goals and has 10 points. Jordan Binnington has started twice, recording a pair of shutouts and making 29 saves.

Sweden beat Canada in the bronze-medal game at the 2024 Worlds in Czechia, with Canada’s last medal coming in 2023 as it claimed its 28th World Championship gold. The Swedes have won the tournament 11 times, most recently in 2018.
