The Swedes have outscored its four foes 17-3 so far and is tied with Canada atop the group standings. On Friday, Sweden takes on Slovenia (0-4-0, 0 points), which faces elimination from medal contention with a loss and is fighting to remain in the top division after playing its way back in last year. Conversely, Sweden clinches a spot in the knockout stage with a regulation win.

Samuel Ersson (Philadelphia Flyers) stopped 20 shots as Sweden beat Latvia 6-0 on Thursday. Captain Rasmus Andersson (Calgary Flames) broke the goose egg on the scoreboard at 10:15 of the second period before Sweden pulled away with four goals in the third period. Six different players lit the lamp in the win. Mika Zibanejad (New York Rangers) scored his team-high fourth goal of the tournament in the win while Elias Lindholm (Boston Bruins) had a goal and an assist and leads the team with six points. Jacob Markström (New Jersey Devils) has allowed just one goal in his two starts, stopping 33 of 34 shots.

Slovenia ran into a buzzsaw on Thursday in a 9-1 rout at the hands of Finland. Bine Mašič (Olimpija, Slovenia) scored the lone goal for the Slovenian side, which was outshot 37-17. Four players have one goal each for Slovenia, including Mašič, Marcel Mahkovec (Olimpija), Blaž Gregorc (Olimpija) and Ken Ograjenšek (Black Wings Linz, Austria). Lukaš Horak has played in three of the team’s four games with a 5.15 goals-against average and .845 save percentage.

Sweden is an 11-time gold-medalist at the World Championship, most recently in 2018, and won the bronze in the 2024 event in Czechia. Slovenia’s top finishes were 13th-place marks in 2002 and 2005 and was relegated after a winless run in Latvia in 2023.
