The United States (1-0-0, 3 points) cruised to a shutout win over co-host Denmark on Friday to open play at the 2025 IIHF World Championships in Group B at Herning, Denmark, and looks to jump back to the top of the group standings on Sunday when it takes on Hungary (0-1-0, 0 points) at the Jyske Bank Boxen. The U.S. is looking for its first medal at the worlds since a bronze in 2021 and hasn’t won a gold in the competition since the 1960 Olympics. The Hungarians earned promotion back to the top division in 2024 and have never medaled, with their best finish a fifth-place mark in 1937.

Joey Daccord of the Seattle Kraken made 26 saves as the United States overpowered Denmark 5-0 on Friday. Matty Bieniers of the Kraken scored two goals in the rout while Cutter Gauthier of the Anaheim Ducks and Mason Lohrei of Boston Bruins each had a goal and an assist. Michael Kesselring of the Utah Mammoth had a pair of helpers while Utah’s Logan Cooley also lit the lamp.

Hungary dropped a 6-1 decision to Germany on Saturday in its first game of the tournament, with Gergő Ambrus and Hungarian club Fehérvár AV19 notching its lone goal 8:29 in the third period, with assists from Tamás Ortenszky of Swiss club EHC Winterthur and Fehérvár’s János Hári.

At the end of the day on Saturday, Switzerland (1-0-1, 4 points) led Group B followed by a trio of teams that won their first games in the U.S., Germany and Kazahkstan. Czechia is fifth with two points after an overtime win, with Norway and Hungary at 0-1-0 and Denmark off to an 0-2-0 start.
