Canada looks to bounce back from a loss against Group A rival the United States against Czechia in the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The Quarterfinals for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship starts on Thursday and Czechia and Canada will be the final game of the day from this tournament from the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata, Ontario. Canada is representing Group A while Czechia is from Group B. Both are trying to bounce back from losses on New Year’s Eve. The home team has had a very surprising tournament so far and not in the way anyone would have expected. Canada beat Germany easily to open the tournament but was shockingly upset against Latvia in a shootout. It was the first time that the country beat Canada in this tournament. Canada once again beat Germany to bounce back but is coming off a lopsided loss against the United States by a 4-1 final.

The game was much closer than the final score would indicate. Bradly Nadeau scored the game-tying goal in the third period. But Canada unraveled after that and was done in by too many penalties. All of the goals from the U.S. came on the power play except the final one which was on an empty net. U.S. goalie Trey Augustine was just too much for Canada to mount any type of comeback as he stopped 38 of 39 shots. With the loss, Canada finished third in group play while the United States secured first place in Group A. The Americans had seven power-play opportunities and Canada will have to be much more disciplined if they are going to make it to the finals and win their first championship since 2023.

For Czechia, Sweden was just too much before this final round. The team was undefeated in their first three games of this tournament but fell 4-2 to Sweden who finished in first place in Group B in the process. Petr Sikora got Czechia within one goal in the second period but Sweden scored two more goals to tally four in the second alone. Eduard Sale’s goal in the third was too little too late for Czechia. Canada is at home and has just too much history in this tournament to not be the favorite but this should be a very close and high scoring game against Czechia.
