After going unbeaten in Group B, Sweden takes on giant-killer Latvia in the opening quarterfinal in Ottawa on Thursday.

Sweden (4-0-0) is the lone unbeaten team remaining at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, but the stakes go up on Thursday with the opening of the elimination round. The Swedes face-off against Latvia (2-2-0), which upset Canada in its Group A round-robin. Both of Latvia’s wins came in overtime and it placed fourth in its group. The winner of Thursday’s game advanced to semifinal play on Saturday, with the four survivors to be reseeded. The Swedes are two-time gold medalists at the event, winning in 1981 and 2012. The best finish the Latvians have managed was a seventh place nod in 2022, the year it returned to the top division in world junior hockey.

Sweden closed out group play on Tuesday with a 4-2 victory over previously unbeaten Czechia to claim the top seed out of Group B. Melker Thelin was in net for three of the games, posting a 3.00 goals-against average and .890 save percentage.

Latvia needed overtime to ensure Germany would return to the relegation playoff, with Eriks Mateiko potting the game-winner 3:23 into the extra session, his second goal of the game. Mateiko’s three goals lead the team while Bruno Osmanis has a goal and four points to top the squad. Linards Feldbergs has done all the goaltending for Latvia, with a 3.14 GAA and .926 save percentage.

The Swedes were the silver medalists at last year’s world juniors held in Gothenburg, Sweden. They beat Switzerland in an overtime quarterfinal decision before getting past Czechia in the semifinals, and then losing to the United States in the gold medal game. Latvia’s 2024 tournament ended with a 7-1 loss to the U.S. in the quarterfinals.
