J.J. Spaun navigates afternoon wind to take a 1-shot lead into the final round at The Players Championship

The final 20 players of the day on Saturday found themselves battling the elements as well as the layout at the Stadium Course of TPC at Sawgrass, with J.J. Spaun posting the lowest score among that group with a two-under-par 70. He takes a one-shot lead into the final round of The Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, over Bud Cauley, who shot up the leaderboard after getting his 66 on the board before the weather got heavy. Winds gusting up to 30 mph late in the day sent scores skyrocketing, with the final 20 players averaging 75.3.

Tee times for the final round have been moved up, with threesomes starting on both No. 1 and No. 10 in an effort to beat forecast heavy winds and possible severe storms in the early afternoon. Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending champion, came back from five shots back to win last year β€” tying the largest comeback at the event β€” and faces a bigger task this year as he is seven strokes behind Spaun entering Sunday.

Lucas Glover and Alex Smalley are three shots behind at nine-under-par, with Corey Conners, Rory McIlroy and Akshay Bhatia four shots back. Six players β€” Danny Walker, Stephan Jaeger, Max McGreevy, Patrick Cantlay, Sepp Straka and Jake Knapp β€” share eighth place at seven-under.

The winner earns $4.5 million from the largest purse in golf of $25 million, as well as 600 FedExCup points and entry into all four major championships for the next three years.
