After making the playoffs as a Wild Card team last year, the Miami Marlins (84-78 record in 2023) are trying to earn a second consecutive postseason bid in 2024. Doing so would be a first in franchise history. Miami starts the season at home at loanDepot Park, where they were 46-35 a year ago. They’ll be taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates (76-86) in their Opening Day matchup on Thursday. Last year, the Pirates had their best season in terms of wins since 2018. Pittsburgh hasn’t made the playoffs since 2015. In 2023, the Marlins went 5-2 in head-to-head matchups against the Pirates.

Sandy Alcantara made a franchise record four consecutive Opening Day starts for the Marlins the last four years, but he’s now recovering from Tommy John surgery. That means 26-year-old lefty Jesus Luzardo will get the ball for the Fish in this one. Luzardo went 10-10 last year with a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts.
27-year-old righty Mitch Keller will make his second consecutive Opening Day start for the Pirates. Keller made one start against the Marlins last year, and it was one of his best. In a late-June game in Miami he allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts, but ended up not earning a decision.
