Seiyu Suzuki of the Chicago Cubs homered twice on Saturday, driving in four runs in Japan’s 8-6 victory over Korea, while Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani hit his second home run in as many games. The Blue Wave jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and came back to tie the game in the fourth before Suzuki worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to put Samurai Japan up for good. Atsuki Taneichi worked a perfect seventh to get the win while Taisei Ota’s 1-2-3 ninth earned the save.

Australia returns to action from a Saturday off day. The Southern Thunder took the lead on Curtis Mead’s three-run homer in the top of the third en route to a 5-1 victory over Czechia on Friday. Alex Hall added a solo shot in the ninth and Jarryd Dale smacked a run-scoring triple in the same frame. Left-hander Josh Hendrickson allowed a run on two hits in three innings before five relievers combined for six shutout innings.

Japan won the WBC in 2006 and 2009 before reclaiming the title in 2023 and is the only nation to win the WBC more than once. Australia reached the quarterfinals for the first time in 2023 losing to Cuba 4-3.
