Italy looks to stay perfect in the 2026 World Baseball Classic on Saturday afternoon, facing off against Puerto Rico.

Italy is having one of the best showings in its World Baseball Classic history when it takes on Puerto Rico in the Quarterfinal round in Houston, TX. Team Italy is trying to stay undefeated in this Classic by winning all four of its games in the Pool B round. Italy earned the top spot out of pool play, and no win was bigger than beating the United States 8-6 in Game 3. That put Team USA in danger of being bounced out in pool play, even though it was favored to win the entire tournament. But Italy did the Americans a huge favor by routing Team Mexico 9-1, putting both Italy and Team USA in the final round of the tournament. Aaron Nola of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched a great game to clinch Pool B for Italy, going five scoreless innings while only giving up four hits and striking out five. Vinnie Pasquantino of the Kansas City Royals would give the Italians all the run support they needed, going 3-for-4 with three homers and three RBIs. Jon Berti of the Chicago Cubs hit a homer, and the Miami Marlins’ Jakob Marsee also drove in two runs. Sam Aldegheri of the Los Angeles Angels will make the start for Team Italy today. He got the start in Italy’s Pool B opener against Brazil, which the team won 8-0. Aldegheri went 4.2 scoreless innings of just one-hit ball while he struck out eight. Italy has the sixth-best odds to win the entire tournament despite winning its pool, at 18-1.

Puerto Rico is coming off a second-place performance behind Team Canada with a 3-1 record out of Pool A in its backyard in San Juan. The team’s biggest win of the pool round was Darell Hernaiz’s walk-off homer in the 10th inning against Panama. This is a team of young players looking to make a name for themselves, with Puerto Rico missing many high-profile players, including Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, and Javier Báez, to name a few. But they’ve been playing great regardless, with Puerto Rico’s only loss coming in their final Pool A game in a 3-2 loss to Team Canada. Puerto Rico got on the board with an RBI single from Nolan Arenado, and got within a run in the fourth on a groundout to bring in Arenado. But neither team could score the rest of the way. Seth Lugo will get the start against Italy today. He pitched Puerto Rico’s first game of the WBC, going four innings of scoreless ball while only giving up three hits. Expect another tight, low-scoring game from these two. Puerto Rico has the fifth-best odds of remaining in the tournament in the quarterfinals, at 16-1.
