Japan (1-0) opened its defense of its World Baseball Classic championship with a bang on Friday and looks to keep pace with 2-0 Australia when it takes on Republic of Korea (1-0) on Saturday at the Tokyo Dome in a Pool C matchup. Samurai Japan is the only squad to win the WBC more than once, taking home the title in 2006, 2009 and 2023 while the Blue Wave lost the 2009 final to Japan in their deepest WBC run.

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers jump started Japan’s 13-0 rout of Chinese Taipei on Friday with a second-inning grand slam as part of a 10-run outburst in the frame. Dodgers teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto opened the game with 2.2 hitless innings while combining with four relievers on a one-hitter in a game called after seven innings by the run rule. Sosuke Genda finished 3-for-3 with four RBI.

Korea belted four home runs on Thursday in an 11-4 victory over Czechia in its tournament opener. Bo Gyeong Moon’s first-inning grand slam sparked the outburst while Shay Whitcomb homered twice and Jahmai Jones also went deep. Hyeong Jun So worked three scoreless innings to open the game, scattering four hits while Moon finished with five RBI.

The Blue Wave are captained by San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee while Dodgers outfielder Hyeseong Kim along with four players born outside of Korea, including Jones and Whitcomb. Japan’s roster is dotted with MLB players including Yuki Matsui, Tomoyuki Sugano, Yusei Kikuchi and Seiya Suzuki.
