Team Japan looks to keep its title defense rolling in the quarterfinal round against Venezuela on Saturday.

Japan looks to stay undefeated in the 2026 World Baseball Classic and keep its title defense hopes alive when it faces Venezuela on Saturday night in Miami, FL. Japan went 4-0 in Pool C play in its own backyard in Tokyo. Japan won Pool A, while Venezuela went 3-1 and was Pool D runner-up behind the Dominican Republic. Japan has the third-best odds to win this tournament at +370, behind the United States and the Dominican Republic. The winner of this game will go on to play the winner of the first quarterfinal matchup of today between Puerto Rico and Italy. Japan dominated its first and last games of Pool A play, beating Czechia, which went 0-4 in Pool C, 9-0. Hiroto Takahashi pitched a great game, going 4.2 scoreless innings while only giving up two hits and striking out five. The bullpen didn’t give up another hit against Czechia. Ukyo Shuto went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs to give Japan all the run support it would need. Japan will start one of the best arms in all of baseball in Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the 2025 World Series MVP. Yamamoto got the start in Japan’s first game of the WBC, going 2.2 scoreless innings for the win, which was a 13-0 rout in seven innings against Chinese Taipei.

Venezuela’s only loss came in its last game against the Dominican Republic, which has been on a tear this entire Classic. Venezuela lost in a close game on Wednesday, 7-4. The Dominican Republic got up 7-3 early after a three-spot in the fourth inning off a three-run shot from Fernando Tatis Jr. Venezuela made a valiant comeback in the ninth inning by scoring two runs on a fielder’s choice from Willson Contreras and a sac fly from Luis Arraez, but the team’s rally ran out of momentum. The Dominican hit four homers, which was just too much to rally from, despite a phenomenal game by Venezuela’s Maikel Garcia, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI double in the third, and Luis Arraez hit another RBI double in the same inning to get within one of the Dominican. Ranger Suarez of the Boston Red Sox will get the start against Japan. The lefty went two innings in Venezuela’s first game of the tournament in a win against the Netherlands, giving up three hits and a run.
