Venezuela finished at the top of a three-team tiebreaker to earn the No. 2 seed and will now face the Dominican Republic on Wednesday in the Caribbean Series.

Venezuela (2-2) finished second in the group stage of the 2025 Caribbean Series and will take on No. 3 seed Dominican Republic (2-2) in the first semifinal at Estadio Nido de los Águilas in Mexicali, Mexico on Wednesday. Venezuela, represented by domestic league champion Cardenales de Lara, clinched the final spot in the knockout stage with a run-rule victory over Japan on Tuesday. The Dominicans, the Leones del Escogido team that won their winter league, lost their final two games of the group stage to fall to the third spot once the tiebreaker was applied.

Venezuela scored five runs in the first inning on Tuesday and Jesus Vargas no-hit Japan over eight innings in a 10-0 run-rule victory. Alexi Amarista ended the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth that triggered the run rule. Amarista also doubled and walked twice, scoring three runs. Vargas struck out seven and walked three.

Dominican Republic led 7-3 after three innings before Puerto Rico stormed back, taking the lead with a five-run eighth inning en route to a 10-7 win on Tuesday. Junior Lake belted a three-run home run in the first for the Dominicans, while Kelvin Gutierrez and Socrates Brito each went 3-for-5 in the loss.

Amarista and Eduardo Garcia are 6-for-15 in the series for Venezuela, with Danry Vasquez leading the club with four RBIs. Vasquez and Amarista have the only home runs. Yamaico Navarro is 5-for-14 for the Dominican Republic, Lake and Sandber Pimentel have homered and Lake’s three RBIs top the squad. Both teams advance, with the loser playing in Thursday’s third-place game and the winner going to Friday’s final.
