Galena (12-3), with six straight wins and an unblemished 6-0 record at home, welcomes McQueen (9-9) to campus on Tuesday night for a high school baseball matchup. The Grizzlies come off a three-game non-conference sweep of visiting Elko last week while the Lancers snapped a two-game losing streak on Saturday with a non-league win over Minden Douglas. Galena shares first place in the Nevada 5A Northern League with Reno at 5-1, while McQueen is 3-4 in the league. Galena swept a doubleheader from Elko on Saturday to complete its sweep. Gavin Talonen was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Cade Folgner also drove in two runs in the Grizzlies 8-7 win in the nightcap. Memphis Venis didn’t allow an earned run in six innings, while fanning eight in the 7-4 victory in the opener.
Tre LaGrone of McQueen committed last fall to play at UNLV, where he was recruited as a pitcher. He was second-team all-conference as a junior and also plays outfield. Against Douglas on Saturday, the Lancers erased a 5-2 deficit with a five-run fourth inning en route to a 9-7 victory.
Galena last won the league tournament and advanced to the state tournament in 2017 where the Grizzlies lost to Henderson Basic in the championship game.
