The Bundesliga will become the first major global soccer league to return this Saturday as ten squads take the pitch in a much-anticipated end to a coronavirus-induced season intermission.
The Rivierderby highlights the action, with the rivalry between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke always producing one of the season's most electric games. This campaign, after a two-month delay, it's more anticipated than ever before. While the two squads both sit near the top of the standings–Dortmund in second, Schalke in sixth–the 14-point gap is perhaps too insurmountable for the latter to have a hope in overtaking their rivals.
Still, there's plenty to fight for. For Dortmund, it's a battle for the top spot in the Bundesliga–the perennial dogfight to pry as many points from opponents whilst hoping that the efficient machine that is Bayern Munich slips up from above. For Schalke, it's a push for a return to European football via the Europa League. Last season–merely a year removed from a second place finish and participation in the Champions League–the club finished a dismal 14th in the table. The road to redemption under manager David Wagner is ongoing, but a win over their bitter enemies would provide a considerable boost in approval among fans.
In other notable matches, third-place RB Leipzig will take on eighth-place Freiburg on Saturday, while Borussia Monchengladbach–trailing Leipzig by a single point–will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the day's late game. Bayern Munich will retain the top-spot regardless of result against Union Berlin on Sunday, but the Bavarians will surely be eager to capture three points with a surging Dortmund hot on their heels.
